Literature; My picks
An amazing review on 5 good books

Literature varies in an array of ways. Many novels are controversial, receiving their deserved praise and consequential criticism. In July alone, I incidentally read about 10 books. While I am not an expert, I tend to have a critical eye on what I do and don't enjoy reading.

Note: This list only consists of novels, not classics

(5) Never Let Me Go - 2005

This book details the life of three friends – Kathy, Ruth, and Tommy –who grew up together in a 'odd' boarding school. The book engages you through its good natured fun, portrayed by the lives of the relatable and fun going characters, while still breaking the boundary on emotional topics such as death and mental anguish. Kazuo Ishiguro truly portrays a beautiful story filled with heart ache and joy. As you grow through their lives, you only feel more connected, understanding the gripping tragedy that is life.

(4) No Longer Human - 1948

No Longer Human, by Osamu Dazai, grapples with the idea of Western ideology. First translated by David Keene, this book tells the tragic story of a young man from Japan who struggles with his societal norms. Through breakup, heart-ache, death, friendship, and success, Osamu Dazai tells us a story that is interpretable in hundreds of ways. It truly portrays the question of,

"What makes me qualify as a human being?"

Ultimately, this book perfectly describes the battle of self doubt, depression, and the feeling of being disqualified as a human being.

(3) In Cold Blood - 1965

All I can say is that Truman Capote is a fabulous author. For forever, journalistic work has always been a favourite of mine. In this novel, a story of two young men and the murder of a family unfolds. The horrifying, yet completely true, events that occur are not only eye grabbing, but mysterious and disturbing. Anything I say is a spoiler to this book, so what I will leave you with is this:

What do you think of the death penalty in relation to these events?

(2) On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous - 2019

Ocean Vuong, a poet, has written a hit novel. On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous is a letter from a son to his mother who cannot read. Throughout the novel, we are faced with the exploration of abuse, human relationships, and sexuality. A common theme throughout the book is the Vietnam-American War, and the memories which course through it. If you're looking for an emotional book that overlooks war, abuse, sexuality, and self discover, read this.

5 stars.

(1) A Little Life - 2015

A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara is an astounding novel full of emotion. While this book starts of somewhat slow, with the long in depth character introductions, you begin to start exploring the emotional depths of the life of Jude St. Francis, a young man with many alleys and corners. As this book continues, it opens a realm of misery– yet you must keep reading. Yanagihara truly exposes readers to the reality of sexual abuse and childhood trauma in this novel.

If you want to cry about something happily, read this book.
